The traditional frame houses an LCD screen that displays up to 20 pictures in a single-view or slide-show format. Once a day, the frame dials in to Ceiva's Web site and downloads any new photos that have been sent to you (or that you've uploaded). What's truly amazing is that it works flawlessly--it's a cutting-edge technology idea that's well executed. The frame itself is a handsome classic black with a black matte. It's about the size of a standard 8-by-10-inch frame, and the viewing area is about 5 by 7 inches. The display resolution is 640 x 480 VGA, and the images are displayed as JPEGs. We were impressed with the picture quality, especially considering the display is passive matrix--colors were a bit washed out, but otherwise pictures were sharp, bright, and looked good. The viewing angle isn't great--you won't be able to see pictures well from the side--but overall, the screen worked very well, even in relatively bright light. You do the bulk of your setup online at Ceiva's Web site. Here, you can lock, delete, upload, or send photos, and you can adjust the rest of your settings, such as the slide-show interval or the time the Ceiva turns off the display every night. (The standard setting shuts it off from 12 a.m. to 4 a.m.) Within your account, you can choose who can send pictures to you (your "Buddy list"). Your buddies don't need to own Ceiva photo frames, but they have to get Ceiva accounts, which are free. In addition to photos, you and your friends can send and receive any kind of digital image, from hand-drawn cards to scanned art. Subscription channels even let you get comics, weather and traffic reports, and horoscopes on a daily basis. Ceiva's site also provides simple tools to add messages to your photos. The controls on the Ceiva are extremely easy to use--there is one button that adjusts brightness and another button to stop the slide show and dial-up on demand. If you want to download pictures immediately (for instance, right after your mother calls and tells you she just sent a new batch), you press and hold the settings button on the frame until it connects. Ceiva obviously listens to their customers. This is a great Gramma present and I just got an 8" model [year 2008] and it is easy to configure, easy for even the technology newbie to operate, and easy to send photos to.
The few negative reviews from earlier years mention things that Ceiva has pretty much fixed. The frame can be remotely configured OR configured from its own on-screen menu with pushbuttons. The unit itself can control almost everything - brightness, fade, timing, screen-off and screen-on times, and even has a "vacation" mode where it goes to sleep and doesn't call in for photos. The ability to add photos to albums online and then send them to the frame is perfectly adequate, but not sophisticated [though they have a Java applet that I haven't tried that's supposed to be drag-and-drop]. I have stored a lot of photos already and will schedule many of them for future delivery using the web interface. Yeah - you can schedule them for future delivery - a few new photos each week, for instance. The $99/year plan for connectivity should be cheaper, but as long as we keep sending photos this is SO EASY compared to printing photos from a digital camera, finding an envelope and posting them via postal service, and it's so easy to just send photos each time I snap a bunch of digital photos.
We've had the frame only a couple of weeks, but this is a keeper!

A great "Grandparents" gift -- my mother doesn't even use email, so this is a great way to send her photos of the kids, and she loves it. Picture quality is not great, but is adequate. The Big Problem is, we are already on our second frame after having numerous hardware problems with the first one. Customer service was okay once you could get a human to speak with you, but this was hard to achieve. They sent out a new power cord once, which fixed the first "burn out," but meanwhile we were paying for the service and not getting any pictures. We demanded (and received) an extension of our subsctiption service for the time it was not working, but they were not about to offer this. Then the frame died for good, about 12-18 months after buying it. We did choose to buy another one since my parents loved it so much, and so far we have had no problems with the second frame for one year...

Thought I had bought the perfect present for my "techno challanged" mother. Little did I know, that this little device would challenge my "techno" skills (I used to build computers and did a bit of software design on the side).
The short version it is that the Ceiva went back to CompUSA for a refund.
The long version (casual buyers exit here) is as follows:
1. Found perfect present...bought it and went home feeling quite smug that I had looked at all of the online reviews and knew that the only problem is that the download speeds are slow.
2. Found out that the download speeds are non-existant....spent 1 hour on the phone with customer service to get this thing set up, and it still would not dial in....saw a bunch of nice pictures on the pre-loaded slideshow though (good news is that I tried to delete these, and could not...would not let me...so when Grandma cannot see your kiddies....at least she can see some other peoples kiddies).
3. Gave it the final effort and tried one last time to get the thing to work. Was told by customer service to push the little white and black buttons in a certain order and that the unit would magically (insert pixie dust here) work....When I asked why this "magical" button push incantation was not included in the manual, was told that they "forgot" (Sorry granny...not good enough to be computer savvy or "magical", but you also have to be a mind reader). In any case, the "magical" white and black button push incantation did not work...so "as if by magic" my credit card is being credited...

This thing is great with good pictures, but I have 3 major problems with it.
1) It brings nice pictures into your living room, but it also brings a big fat advertisement to your living room. It automatically displays a picture of a Ceiva ad, you have no ability to delete it. I wanted pictures of family, not advertisements. It would be ok if it were free, but this thing is very expensive, they should not make you pay money and force you to look at ads.
2) The website is unreliable. More than a few times I have tried to upload pictures and the website locks up at the log in page.
3) Connecting is unreliable. You have the option of pushing a button and manually connecting to download pictures. Last night, 9 out of 10 times it did not connect with error messages such as "no carrier." You are paying the same amount for this per month as a telephone internet provider, yet it is not nearly reliable. They need better infrastructure if they are going to charge these prices.
Otherwise, very nice.

I know it's not the greatest quality, I know there are other options out there, but let me put it to you like this:
My grandmother is over 70. She doesn't want to learn how a computer works, yet she loves the idea of seeing new pictures of her family everyday. This thing plugs into the phone line & dials up a server on a nightly basis to download any new pictures you've sent it.
I bought this for my grandmother 3 years ago & she STILL calls me on a weekly basis to tell me how wonderful it is to see the pictures everyday! I created the master login, & created minor *client* logins for everyone in my family. They can all log in & send her pictures. Some of my family are in South Carolina, New York, Washington, California, & Missouri. She gets updated pictures daily without having to do a thing!
This is a gift that you can't go wrong on - it's keeps on giving even years later.
